Specialist torture and trauma services complement mainstream healthcare by providing tailored support for refugees who have experienced persecution, violence or forced displacement.

Specialist torture and trauma support #
In addition to the mental health challenges that anyone may experience, some people from refugee backgrounds may benefit from specialist support relating to experiences before arriving in Australia.
CRISP newcomers are eligible for government-funded support through the Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (FASSTT), a national network of eight specialist agencies. Every Australian state and territory has a FASSTT member organisation that provides specialist services.

Considering Culture #
Understandings of mental health differ across cultures and may carry stigma for some people.
CSGs are encouraged to explain that, in Australia, mental health includes overall wellbeing as well as diagnosed mental health conditions, and that seeking support is accepted and encouraged.
