What is the CRISP? #
The Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Program (CRISP) is a national initiative that brings together government and community to support the successful settlement of refugee households.
The program recognises that, with appropriate guidance and resources, everyday Australians can provide practical support and a welcoming local community for refugee newcomers.
Community sponsorship in Australia #
CRISP draws on the community refugee sponsorship model first established in Canada during the 1970s. Similar programs now operate in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand.
Following a successful four-year pilot that began in 2022, CRISP became a permanent Australian program on 1 July 2026.
Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia (CRSA) continues to deliver the program nationally in partnership with the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs and with the support of communities across Australia.

Rather than prescribing every action, this guidebook provides practical guidance to help groups develop a holistic, strengths-based Settlement Plan that supports the refugee household’s independence, dignity and long-term settlement.
