Open a bank account early #
Community Supporter Groups (CSGs) should support the Refugee Household to open an Australian bank account as soon as possible after arrival, ideally within 48 hours. A bank account is required before newcomers can register for income support or Medicare, so completing this step early helps ensure government support can begin without unnecessary delays.

At the initial bank appointment, request a letter confirming each Household member’s name and bank account details. This document is required when registering with Services Australia and also serves as an additional identity document.
Obtaining the letter immediately helps prevent unnecessary delays when applying for income support.
“Opening a bank account promptly is one of the first practical steps that enables newcomers to access financial support and begin managing their own finances.”
