Planning transport support #
During their first weeks in Australia, the Refugee Household will need to attend a range of important appointments. Before arrival, CSGs are encouraged to discuss how transport will be provided during this period and agree on an approach that works for the group.
Having clear conversations early helps establish shared expectations about when transport assistance will be available and when newcomers will begin travelling independently.
Building independence #
Different CSGs support transport in different ways during the early settlement period.
Some groups choose to drive newcomers to their initial appointments because it is the most practical option. Others use these early appointments as opportunities to introduce public transport by travelling together and explaining how local services operate.
There is no single approach that suits every group. The goal is to help newcomers become confident using the transport options available in their community as soon as practical.
