Community Connectedness Summary #
Community connections are most meaningful when they reflect each newcomer’s own interests, identity and choices. Support should always be guided by the Refugee Household’s preferences.

Supporting LGBTQIA+ newcomers #
Some LGBTQIA+ newcomers may wish to connect with local LGBTQIA+ organisations, community groups or support services, while others may not. CSGs should avoid making assumptions and instead be guided by each person’s preferences and readiness.
Researching inclusive local services before they are needed can make it easier to provide information if a newcomer asks for support.
The Forcibly Displaced People Network (FDPN) provides resources, information and support for LGBTQIA+ people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

- Are newcomers connected with their local community through activities, libraries or community groups?
- Are they connected with cultural, linguistic or faith communities if they would like to be?
- If appropriate, are LGBTQIA+ newcomers connected with inclusive community organisations and services they have chosen?
Managing assumptions #
Many newcomers value connections with people who share their cultural background, while others may prefer to establish themselves within the broader Australian community. Neither approach is right or wrong.
Support should be guided by the Refugee Household’s own preferences rather than assumptions about culture, identity or community.
