Supporting a Refugee Household is a shared learning experience. Staying flexible and being guided by newcomers’ own goals helps build a positive and respectful sponsorship experience.

Plan for flexibility #
Community Supporter Groups often spend considerable time preparing before a Refugee Household arrives. While planning is important, settlement rarely follows a fixed path. Unexpected situations, changing priorities and new opportunities are all part of the settlement journey.
Taking time before arrival to discuss how your group will work together, make decisions and respond to challenges can make it easier to navigate difficulties if they arise.
Recognise assumptions #
Many challenges arise when expectations or assumptions differ from reality. Every Refugee Household arrives with its own experiences, priorities and plans for life in Australia.
Rather than expecting newcomers to follow the group’s plans, CSGs are encouraged to remain open, adaptable and willing to adjust their approach as the Household’s needs and goals become clearer.
