School-Aged Children #
Help children begin their education in Australia by enrolling them in school as soon as practical and ensuring they receive the language and health support they need.
At a glance #
- Secure long-term housing early, as school enrolment is often based on residential address.
- Children may need to catch up on vaccinations before starting school.
- English language support is available through intensive language programs or mainstream schools.
School enrolment #
Children are generally required to participate in education between the ages of six and seventeen, although compulsory school attendance requirements vary between states and territories. CSGs should refer to their relevant state or territory education department to understand local enrolment requirements.
Because school enrolment is often determined by where a family lives, securing long-term housing early will help minimise delays in children starting school.
Children may also need to catch up with the Australian vaccination schedule before they can enrol. A GP or Refugee Health service can assist with vaccinations and any related health requirements.
English language support #
Many regions offer intensive English language schools or programs that provide newly arrived students with additional English language support before they transition into mainstream schooling.
Where an intensive English program is not available, or the Refugee Household prefers their children to begin at a mainstream school immediately, CSGs should work with the school and the relevant state or territory education department to understand the English language support available.
