Establishing Contact with Refugees Offshore
Choosing a communication approach #
Every Community Supporter Group develops its own communication style. Some groups nominate a single member to act as the primary contact before arrival, while others create a shared WhatsApp group that includes all CSG members. There is no single correct approachโthe most effective method is one that works well for both the group and the Refugee Household.
Groups may also choose different times to establish contact. Some prefer to reach out as soon as contact details are provided, while others wait until travel arrangements have been confirmed. Each approach has advantages, and CRSA can provide guidance when the time comes.
Translation tools #
WhatsApp is commonly used by many Refugee Households before arrival and includes a built-in translation feature that can assist with everyday conversations. While useful for informal communication, automated translation should not be relied upon for medical, legal or other important information.
For translating longer informal messages, groups may find the Tarjimly app helpful. Tarjimly provides free human translation and is best suited to general communication. Formal documents should continue to be translated using appropriate document translation services.
