Understanding settlement #
The Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) describes settlement as a two-way process in which migrants and refugees adjust to life in Australia while Australian communities actively welcome and support them.
Settlement is not a fixed or linear journey. Each household’s experience will differ, and progress may vary over time depending on changing circumstances.
Settlement includes many interconnected areas such as housing, English language learning, education, employment, health and wellbeing, transport, finances and participation in the local community.
This guide supports Community Supporter Groups (CSGs) in planning for these areas throughout the Refugee Household’s settlement and integration journey.
The Settlement Checklist at the end of Part Two provides suggested timeframes for settlement tasks and helps groups allocate responsibilities across their members.
