Respecting individual choice #
Connections with diaspora communities are deeply personal. While some Refugee Households may wish to reconnect with people who share their cultural, linguistic or faith background, others may choose different pathways for building community in Australia.
CSGs should allow the Household to guide these decisions and avoid making assumptions about the importance of diaspora connections.
Building local cultural connections #
Where appropriate, CSGs are encouraged to identify local community members or organisations that share the Refugee Household’s cultural background. These groups can provide valuable cultural guidance, community connections and practical support during settlement.
Ethno-specific organisations may also help CSGs better understand cultural practices, expectations and community networks while supporting the Household’s own goals and preferences.
