On-Arrival Accommodation #
Prepare safe, suitable accommodation before the Refugee Household arrives and plan ahead for their transition into long-term housing.

Housing responsibilities #
Community Supporter Groups (CSGs) are responsible for:
- Providing housing until long-term housing is secured.
- Supporting the Refugee Household to secure long-term housing.
- Assisting with the connection of utilities.
- Furnishing the long-term residence.
Preparing temporary accommodation #
Accommodation should be ready before the Refugee Household arrives and provide appropriate sleeping arrangements for every family member, along with access to essential facilities such as cooking, bathroom and laundry amenities.
Because the time required to secure long-term housing varies between locations and households, groups should plan and budget for up to six weeks of temporary accommodation. Where possible, consider accommodation that can be extended or replaced with suitable alternatives if permanent housing takes longer to secure.
Planning for housing costs #
It is generally reasonable for newcomers to begin contributing to rent approximately four weeks after arrival, or when they move into long-term accommodation, whichever occurs first.
Discuss these expectations with the Household early so everyone understands when rent payments or contributions will begin.
Housing is often the largest cost associated with supporting a Refugee Household, so groups are encouraged to research local rental costs during their planning and budgeting.
