Building financial independence #
Community Supporter Groups play an important role in helping newcomers develop the knowledge and confidence to manage everyday finances independently.
While some financial assistance may be provided during the initial settlement period, the CSG’s role is intended to be primarily non-financial, apart from agreed start-up costs that are generally expected to conclude within approximately the first three months after arrival.
Establishing a sustainable lifestyle #
Although every CSG will provide support in its own way, CRSA encourages groups to carefully consider any financial assistance that continues beyond the initial settlement period.
Many Australians live on government income support, and helping the Refugee Household establish realistic spending habits and a lifestyle that can be maintained within their available income is an important step towards long-term independence.
Supporting informed financial choices #
Rather than meeting ongoing expenses, CSGs are encouraged to focus on building the Household’s capacity to make informed financial decisions, manage everyday costs and confidently navigate life in Australia.
