Supporting faith and community connections #
Refugee newcomers benefit from opportunities to build connections beyond the Community Supporter Group (CSG). Community participation helps strengthen independence and reduces reliance on the CSG over time.
When supporting community connections, consider each person’s culture, religion and the specific needs of children, young people, older adults and LGBTQIA+ people.
Respecting individual beliefs #
People from refugee backgrounds are as diverse as the wider Australian community. Their connection to religion or faith should never be assumed, and support should always reflect the Refugee Household’s own beliefs, preferences and wishes.
For many people, however, reconnecting with a place of worship soon after arrival can be an important milestone that provides familiarity, belonging and community support.
Preparing before arrival #
Where the Refugee Household has expressed a desire to engage with a faith community, CSGs are encouraged to establish contact with an appropriate local place of worship before arrival. This can help involve the faith community in welcoming the Household and provide another source of advice and ongoing support if required.
