Core principles of community sponsorship #
Strengths-Based Approach
Build on the strengths, resilience and existing capabilities of individuals, households and communities, using these as the starting point for support.
Trauma-Informed Approach
Recognise that past experiences may shape current needs. Prioritise safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment and respect.
Managing Assumptions and Expectations
Approach new relationships with openness and flexibility, recognising that both Community Supporter Groups and refugee households may have different expectations.
Considering Culture
Remain curious and avoid assumptions. Everyone belongs to multiple cultures that influence how they experience the world.
Considering Power and Privilege
Be aware of the natural power imbalance that can exist between supporting groups and refugee households, and encourage genuine participation in decision-making.
Considering Agency
Support refugee households to make their own decisions and pursue their own goals, promoting autonomy and self-determination.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Respect personal boundaries and seek permission before sharing another person’s story or personal information.
Effective Group Dynamics
Work collaboratively, communicate openly and support one another as an independent, self-governed volunteer group.
“Community sponsorship succeeds when support is grounded in dignity, partnership and respect for each person’s strengths and choices.”
