Mental Health #

At a glance #

  • Mental health challenges may emerge months after arrival, not just in the early settlement period.
  • Encourage newcomers to access support through their GP and other mental health services.
  • Know how to respond if urgent mental health concerns arise.

Supporting mental wellbeing #

Settlement is a significant life transition, and emotional wellbeing can change over time. Mental health concerns may become more noticeable several months after arrival, once the initial adjustment period has passed.

CSGs are encouraged to check in regularly with newcomers throughout the 12-month support period and remind them that seeking mental healthcare is common, appropriate and encouraged in Australia. A GP is usually the first point of contact for accessing mental health support.

Before the Household arrives, research local mental health services so newcomers can be provided with information that enables them to access support independently whenever they need it.

Common pathways to mental health support #

Two common pathways to mental health support are:

  • Access to a free or subsidised psychologist through a Mental Health Care Plan prepared by a GP. #

  • Referral to specialist services for people who have experienced torture or trauma (see the related article on Torture and Trauma). #

Crisis support #

CSGs are encouraged to provide newcomers with information about 24-hour crisis support services and remind them that they can request a professional interpreter when contacting healthcare providers if needed.

If there are urgent concerns that a newcomer may be at immediate risk of harming themselves or others, CSGs should:

  • Contact emergency services (000), or assist the person to attend the nearest hospital emergency department.
  • Contact the local Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (or Psychiatric Emergency Team, depending on the state or territory) for immediate mental health support.

“Normalising conversations about mental health helps create an environment where newcomers can seek support early and confidently.”
