Become a Supporting Community Organisation

While Australia’s borders have largely been closed to international and humanitarian arrivals, we have developed a modified version of a future Australian sponsorship program – which we call the Group Mentorship Program.

For the second round of the program, we have identified a specific role for supporting community-based organisations to assist in the mobilisation, organisation and oversight of mentor groups. This has been done to further refine elements of this role, test its functionality and ascertain scalability for a future sponsorship program.

To find out more about how your organisation can get involved in the program, check out our fact sheet.

Register your interest on behalf of a community organisation or business

If you represent a community organisation that is keen to get involved in sponsoring or mentoring refugee newcomers, please register your interest here. We will contact you to let you know about opportunities to be involved in our next Group Mentorship Program and any future community sponsorship programs.

Business can play a leading role in this movement too. As a business you could offer employment opportunities to refugee newcomers, provide goods and services to support refugee newcomers on arrival or along their settlement journey or as a way for your staff to volunteer their time and expertise. Please register your interest here and we’ll let you know about opportunities as they arise.

The form will also give you the option of signing our ‘civil society pledge’ which shows policymakers the large and growing number of organisations who are keen to see Australia establish an affordable and accessible community sponsorship program for refugees. Community organisations and businesses all over Australia have already endorsed this pledge (see list below) – add your organisation’s name.

A pledge from the Australian community to support refugee sponsorship

Community sponsorship of refugees is a way of involving ordinary citizens in supporting and welcoming refugees in a way that ensures their full social and economic inclusion.

On the occasion of the inaugural Global Refugee Forum in December 2019, we welcome the Australian government’s commitment to undertake a much-needed review of this policy area and we pledge to actively support the development of a community refugee sponsorship program in Australia which is:

  1. Co-designed with community groups and refugees
  2. Affordable to sponsors
  3. Accessible to refugees in most urgent need of resettlement
  4. Engages a broad cross-section of the Australian community
  5. Provides a way of expanding Australia’s resettlement program

We encourage Australian community organisations and businesses to join this open and on-going pledge to see this vision realised before the next Global Refugee Forum in 2023.
